Locally Owned Dessert Shop Pairs Ice Cream and Donuts for a Sweet Twist in Downtown Garland

Making its thrid annual appearance, the Mexipino festival hosted by Scoop N’ Buns returned Oct. 26 to Garland, TX, to celebrate the foods and traditions of both Filipino and Mexican Americans in DFW. 

At Scoop N' Buns, dessert lovers find a creative twist on classic treats in the heart of downtown Garland. The locally owned dessert shop, known for its unique ice cream donut sandwiches, has become a go-to for both families and dessert enthusiasts, shining in recent years as the staple location for Filipinos and Mexicans to celebrate their roots each year. 

This year’s festivities were themed around Halloween, and included activities from tinikling dancing by Maharlika Dancers, DJ Jerry Zeng, folklorico dances, pinata bashing, costume contests and a karaoke floor. The free event allowed attendees to try different pallets of flavors, ranging from lechon, barbacoa tacos, fusion egg rolls, unique jerkies, and limited Scoop N’ Buns menu including a matcha iced series, foamed lattes and other Halloween and Día de Muertos themed drinks. 

Opened by a nurse who wanted to bring something unique to her community, Filipina Zoya Elsisura and her Hispanic husband Gerardo Hernadez transformed a thrift store on the corner of a train station into Scoop N’ Buns. The location serves ice cream nestled between fresh, locally sourced donuts, among other innovative options like churro bites with ice cream and ube-flavored desserts. Located at 507 West Walnut Street, the shop caters to a range of tastes, including vegan and Filipino-inspired treats. 

With a commitment to quality and community, Scoop N’ Buns sources its ice cream from award-winning North Texas vendors, while its donuts come from a local Garland bakery. The shop, designed with a vibrant, family-friendly vibe, is a convenient stop for shoppers and commuters in downtown Garland.
